8-year-old bites tongue when school bus hits pothole

DETROIT (WJBK) -

An 8-year-old boy is recovering after biting his tongue when his school bus hit a pothole.

Derauta Harris was riding the bus home from Erma Henderson Elementary School on West Chicago Street in Detroit.

He and his mother say the bus hit a pothole and the bump caused him to bite his tongue so hard he had to get four stitches at the hospital.

The boy's mother, Angie Jernigan, is also upset that no one from the school or the bus company is taking any responsibility for failing to contact her.

"The bus driver, she only gave me one piece of tissue. And then, when I told her to stop, she kept going," says Derauta.

"At the hospital, they took photographs of it. His tongue looked like it was filleted," says the boy's mother. "He's on four different medications and he's not supposed to go back to school within seven to 10 days. So, he's missing school and they don't think [anyone] is responsible for this."

Jernigan says she learned about her son's injury when another boy on the bus called her with a cell phone.
