Neighbors Take Drastic Measures To Keep Elderly Woman Safe

Posted: Updated:
LINDENWOLD, N.J. -

Never again. Community members say they're taking drastic action after an elderly woman was assaulted in her own home.

Some South Jersey residents say they're still outraged, following a home invasion in Lindenwold last month. It sent a 93-year old woman to the hospital. Now, those neighbors are responding with an incredible act of kindness.

The victim's eyes and mouth were bound with duct tape, her phone lines cut so she couldn't call for help.

A crime so despicable people who heard about it say they won't stand for it.

John Parsons took it personally when he heard someone entered the Lindenwold home of a 93-year old woman in the early hours of the morning one day last month. Investigators say a man put tape over the victims eyes and mouth' cut her phone lines then blocked her from leaving while he burglarized her home.

"It bothered me because I have a 90 year old grandmother that I care for and to tell you the truth if that was done to her I would not be standing here I would be in a jail somewhere," said Parsons.

He took the crime as a call to action. The owner of Malverne Painting in Vineland says he collected donations on Facebook and set about repairing the woman's home while she's recovering.

With help from Tony Marinari of Academy Electric and six off duty officers from Lindenwold Police Department, Parsons beefed up security by installing surveillance cameras around the victim's home and solar powered security lights throughout her yard.

"She had a nightlight over her bed that looked sentimental to me they ripped that out of the wall and I could see her using it I stopped what I was doing went to my truck and put that light back where it was," said Marinari. "I would say 200 percent more secure than it was before we got there."

He shared these pictures of volunteers working on the house. The woman is still recovering and has yet to come home but neighbors say they feel blessed to live in a community where the worst can bring out the best in people.

"Make me feel humbled that we have that type of people in our neighborhood," said Kevin Stephens.

Along with the work on her house, parsons collected donations to give to the victim. Police say their investigation continues into who may have committed this outrageous crime.
