PHILADELPHIA -

Police in South Philadelphia are investigating a shooting. The victim says she was sleeping when someone broke into her house and shot her.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser spoke to a neighbor that woman turned to for help.

"She came knocking on the door first thing in the morning saying help, help, help," that's what a Point Breeze man said after he heard the pounding on his front door and the cries for help. He says he knew something was terribly wrong with his neighbor. As he opened his front door, he saw her wrapped in a blanket and bleeding heavily.

"Distraught, asking for help," he explained to FOX 29. "Thank God she's not dead."

This would be Good Samaritan was about to take the woman in and call police when officers arrived on scene. They quickly scooped up the wounded victim and raced her to the hospital.

"She's very nice. Every time I see her, she always speaks to me. She's very respectable," he added.

Police say the woman told them she was shot in the back after a masked man broke through her front door, went to her second floor bedroom and then stood over the victim.

"For some unknown reason, this male fires two shots at her from point blank range while she's laying in bed. The male then flees the scene," said Chief Inspector Scott Small moments after the shooting in the 2200 block of Sears Street.

Police stood guard at the house all day. Late Tuesday afternoon, detectives arrived with a warrant to search the home. Sources say the woman later recanted her story about the masked gunman, then stopped talking to detectives.

Police are now reviewing nearby surveillance video. The shooting rattled the victim's neighbors here in Point Breeze, several said they were glad the victim's little daughter wasn't home.

"That's what I was worried about, her daughter," one neighbor told Fox 29.

The woman was listed in stable condition at the hospital. She is expected to be released. The investigation into the shooting is continuing. Police do not have a motive at this point.
