Hammer Attack Trial: Witnesses saw Devault with a black eye

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A former exotic dancer accused of killing her husband by beating him with a hammer, Marissa Devault claims it was self-defense.

On Tuesday defense attorneys called witnesses to the stand trying prove Devault was a battered wife.

An administrator at the school Marissa Devault's kids went to took the stand in her defense. That administrator got emotional when talking about Marissa.

"I'm sorry it's been a lot of years," said Ayesha Harris.

Ayesha Harris told the jury months before Marissa killed her husband she started to notice problems when Marissa would drop off her kids at school.

"She would come in with a continuing disarray, hair, clothing, no make up, she came in one time and she had a black eye with glasses on. Things like that," said Harris.

Harris says she only saw Marissa with one black eye and never witnessed any physical or verbal abuse.

A neighbor also testified she also saw Marissa with a black eye once.

"They came over for drinks and she still had sunglasses on and I said what happened... she said she was clumsy and Dale said yeah shes always clumsy and my husband just said wow and we just continued the night" said Lisa Kohl.

Lisa Kohl says she never saw any physical abuse but claims Marissa's husband seemed like he was very controlling. She also says during a visit to the house she saw some strange things in the kids room.

"There was food in the closet and there were locks on the door... I asked her why there was food and locks and she said I want them to be able to come out when they want to come out or lock the doors so no one came in," said Kohl.

And just to clarify those locks were on the inside of the kids rooms. So they could lock themselves in on their own. Testimony continues Wednesday morning.
