Phone scammers posing as Kendall County Sheriff`s police

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police in southwest suburban Kendall County are warning residents about phone scammers pretending to be calling from the sheriff's office.

The scam involves callers claiming to be "majors" or "captains" from the Kendall County Sheriff's office soliciting donations from residents, sheriff's police said in a release.

The Kendall County Sheriff's office does not ask for donations by telephone, the release said.

Residents should check the name of a supposed charity or company with the Better Business Bureau or other consumer agencies before agreeing to anything, police say.

Police also recommend checking to see whether a charity is registered by checking with the Attorney General's Charitable Trusts Bureau at (312) 814-2595.
