Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A failure to follow security procedures may have allowed a 37-year-old man convicted of stealing computers from an Alhambra health care office to slip away from an inmate reception center near the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles just hours after being sentenced, sheriff's officials said today.

Christopher Lee Brown was sentenced Wednesday to four years and eight months behind bars following his March 6 conviction on two counts of second-degree commercial burglary and one count of receiving stolen property.

Brown escaped from custody about 10 p.m. Wednesday from a release area at the inmate reception center in the 400 block of Bauchet Street, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida.

The inmate reception center is adjacent to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, and serves both that facility and the Los Angeles County Men's Central Jail across the street, Nishida said.

Investigators believe Brown impersonated another inmate to facilitate his escape, which was discovered during nightly wristband counts, according to the sheriff's department.

"As a result of the inmate's actions, and that it appears that mandated security practices may not have been followed, the inmate was able to escape through the jail Inmate Reception Center release area door. Identified security concerns were immediately remedied,'' sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said without specifying the specific practices or concerns.

Parker said "a comprehensive review of jail systems, especially related to releases'' was underway as a result of the escape, which was confirmed when closed-circuit television video showed Brown leaving through the release area, officials said.

A transient with a string of prior arrests on suspicion of theft-related offenses, Brown was convicted of stealing two laptop computers and three flash drives that contained key information belonging to about 729,000 patients treated at a health-care group's six hospitals.

Brown broke into the building in October and December, Deputy District Attorney David Eng said, adding that Brown was arrested soon after the second burglary.

Brown also was arrested in 1997 and later convicted for assault with a deadly weapon in the San Luis Obispo area and in 2007 was arrested on suspicion of cohabitant/spousal assault in the Santa Barbara area.

He also has been arrested in El Monte and Newport Beach, according to the sheriff's department.

If seen, he should not be approached, authorities warned.

Anyone with information concerning Brown's whereabouts was urged to contact the sheriff's department at (323) 267-4800. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
