Diane von Furstenberg: You Go Back To Your Identity

Posted: Updated:

A legendary name, and an iconic dress. Diane von Furstenberg joined us in the studio today to talk fashion, and decades of dresses with Lisa Breckenridge and Maria Sansone.

40th Anniversary of the wrap dress & The Journey of a Dress Exhibition

In a year that marks the 40th anniversary of the wrap dress, the exhibition focuses on a retrospective of vintage and contemporary DVF wraps, with a timeline chronicling the journey of the iconic dress—from the first sample to a world-renowned symbol of power and freedom for entire generations of women. Limited Edition anniversary dresses created for the exhibition are also on display.

The exhibition includes portraits of designer, muse, and collector Diane von Furstenberg by celebrated artists such as Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger, Chuck Close, Francesco Clemente, Helmut Newton, and Annie Leibovitz. The work of Anh Duong, Zhang Huan and Li Songsong is also featured, as well as that of other contemporary artists. In A Ghost May Come—a stunning new piece from Dustin Yellin—the likeness of a wrap dress is suspended in glass, while colorful illustrations from Antonio, Ruben Toledo and Konstantin Kakanias strike a more playful tone. The exhibition also includes stills from the wrap dress' big screen cameos, from Cybill Shepherd in Taxi Driver to Amy Adams in American Hustle.

For the conception and design of the exhibition, DVF worked closely with Exhibition Designer, Bill Katz, Production Designer, Stefan Beckman, and Fashion Curator, Michael Herz.

"I was 26 when I created the wrap dress," says Diane von Furstenberg, "I had no idea it would become such a phenomenon.  I am excited and thrilled to have chosen Los Angeles to celebrate the four decades of The Journey of a Dress."

The exhibition is housed in the historic Wilshire May Company Building, the former home of the famous May Co department store and the future Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

DVF will be celebrating throughout 2014, kicking off with a Limited Edition Collection created in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation, available exclusively at DVF.com and in DVF shops. It is also inviting women all over the world to become a part of the journey by submitting their personal wrap stories and photos at dvfwrapstory.com.

The exhibition is open to the public and runs from January 11, 2014 through May 2014.

DVF Awards

The DVF Awards were created in 2010 by Diane von Furstenberg and The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation to recognize and support women who are using their resources, commitment and visibility to transform the lives of other women. These are women who have had the courage to fight, the power to survive and the leadership to inspire.

Each year, five awards are given to women who have demonstrated leadership, strength and courage in their commitment to women's causes.

Two awards are given to women within Vital Voices' Global Leadership Network who are advancing the social, economic, and political position of women in their countries.

The People's Voice Award is chosen by popular vote from a select number of nominees presented at dvfawards.com. The public is invited to vote online and the award is granted to the woman who receives the most votes. Public voting will run through Friday, March 21st, and votes can be cast on http://www.dvf.com/dvf-awards.html

The Inspiration Award is given to a woman who has demonstrated extraordinary strength and courage in the face of adversity, and is now using her experience and influence to effect positive change.

The Lifetime Leadership Award is given to an individual who has dedicated her entire life and body of work to instilling in other women the courage to fight, the power to survive and the leadership to inspire.

Honorees receive $50,000 in support of the organization (U.S. 501c3) with which they are affiliated from The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation to further their work.
