Mom Says School Won't Let Boy Bring "My Little Pony" Bag

Posted: Updated:

A North Carolina boy says he is bullied for liking ''My Little Pony,'' and the school disapproves as well.

Nine-year-old Grayson Bruce is a big fan of the cartoon, a show that emphasizes friendship to children.

Grayson is constantly being discouraged by classmates who tell him his favorite toy is for girls.

"They're taking it a little too far, with punching me, pushing me down, calling me horrible names, stuff that really shouldn't happen," said Grayson.

His mother says Grayson's school also discourages the boy's love for the show. Last week, the school asked him to leave his Rainbow Dash bag at home because officials felt it was distraction and a trigger for bullying.

Many people who have heard Grayson's story have shown much support, including his mother. Noreen Bruce supports her son's love of the show saying there are no bad words or violence. Noreen disagrees with the school and wants the school to punish the bullies for their actions.

"Saying a lunch box is a trigger for bullying is like saying a short skirt is a trigger for rape. It's flawed logic. It doesn't even make any sense," said Noreen.

The school sent out a statement saying "an initial step was taken to immediately address a situation that had created a disruption in the classroom. Buncombe County Schools takes bullying very seriously, and we will continue to take steps to resolve this issue."

Grayson is using a different bag to carry his lunch to school, but he and his mom say they don't believe it's right to force him to leave the My Little Pony bag at home.

He is also getting a lot of online support after a friend created a support page for him on Facebook. "Support for Grayson" has nearly 10,000 likes. A Change.org petition is in support of the child has several hundred signatures.
