Chicago archdiocese to release more abuse files

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The Archdiocese of Chicago says it plans to release more internal documents by the end of the year detailing the church's handling of child sexual abuse cases involving dozens of priests.

In January, the archdiocese released more than 6,000 pages revealing that for decades its top leaders had helped hide the abuse. That release was part of a legal settlement with victims and included personnel files on 30 priests.

Archdiocese officials told the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald Friday they will release documents on 35 other priests voluntarily and "in the name of transparency."

They gave no precise timeframe, but said they hoped to release them by the end of the year.

Bishop Francis Kane says the church is doing "all that's possible that this (abuse) will never happen again."
