Sexting Scandal Hits A Middle School

Posted: Updated:

A sexting scandal is rocking a Brentwood, California community.

More than a dozen middle school students have been blackmailed by cell phone pictures.

A teenage boy at J. Douglas Adams Middle School is accused of using inappropriate photos of a girl to coerce her into engaging in sexual acts with him on campus.

Police say the case involves more than a dozen students sexting each other.

Parents are shocked.

"It's one thing you don't want in the community. You work hard to make sure your community is protected and when it comes to the forefront it's disturbing," says a parent Mike Wright.

Police are talking to at least 12 boys who were sending and receiving inappropriate photos at Adams, Bristow and Edna Hill Middle Schools in Brentwood and Excelsior Middle School in Byron.

The students involved range in age from 12 to 14.

"I think as adults we all have the responsibility to remind children that their online actions have real life consequences," says the Superintendent, of Brentwood Union School District, Dana Eaton.

Eaton says the school has handed out severe discipline to the teens and they're working to prevent anything like this from happening again.

Brentwood police haven't found any new victims, but know how damaging and embarrassing the allegations are for the teens.

"As we all know in the cyber world, once that information is out it is nearly impossible to get it back," says Walter O'grodnick of Brentwood Police Department.

That's why police and the school district are encouraging parents to talk to their children about how they use their cell phones and the internet.

Wright continues, "like the adage goes, it takes a community to raise a child. We're only prepared as we educate ourselves."

Police say they still need to go through confiscated cell phones to look for inappropriate images.

It's still too early to determine whether or not these students will face charges for the sexting scandal.
