Where Were You When It Hit?

Posted: Updated:

Of all places, I was in the bathroom at the station when the 4.4 magnitude quake shook LA and surrounding areas this morning at 6:26.

Insert jokes here.  But, if you felt it this morning, you know mother nature's Monday morning wake-up call was absolutely no joke.  No, it didn't do much damage and thank goodness no one was hurt, but it certainly rattled a lot of nerves, including mine.  And, I'm no stranger to earthquakes.  Growing up in the Bay Area, I vividly remember experiencing the shake, rattle and roll that was the notorious Loma Prieta 6.9 magnitude temblor which killed 63 people and injured almost 4,000 others.  Since then, I've felt several more quakes, but none as unnerving as this morning.

So, the question is: are you prepared for THE BIG ONE? If not, now's the time to make sure you have an emergency response plan in place and a survival kit.  A few years ago, I invested in an official emergency supply kit from "Quake Kare."   If you're interested, you can go to www.quakekare.com  and pick the kit that's right for you and your family.

Of course, places like Home Depot and Costco sell similar kits.  My concern is not where you buy one; it's simply that you have one.  The idea is to have enough supplies, canned goods and water to last 72 hours.

Another thing to think about, do you know what to do when a quake hits? Emergency officials say, whether we're at home or work, we should "drop, cover, and hold on."  The web is filled with great resources when it comes to earthquake preparedness so I suggest reacquainting yourself with the "do's and don'ts," so when the next quake hits, you'll be prepared.

Apple's announcement of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last week included a free download of U2's newest album to 500 million iCloud accounts. The free giveaway upset some customers who did not want the 11 songs from 'Songs of Innocence' synced to their devices without their permission.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
