CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was injured in a police-involved shooting that occurred in the Englewood neighborhood Monday night, officials said.

Englewood District police officers were called about 9:50 p.m. about a man with a gun in the 6100 block of South Sangamon Avenue, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

When police arrived, they saw the man run into a house and reappear on the balcony with a weapon in his hand, "waving the weapon at the officers in an apparent agitated state," according to the release.

When police tried to calm the man down and get him to come down from the balcony, he pointed the weapon toward the officers, at which point one of the officers shot him.

The man was taken to a hospital, and no officers were hurt in the incident, according to the release.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the man was walking up and down South Sangamon Avenue in the area of 59th and 61st streets "threatening people," Camden said.

The man then ran to a home and stood on the roof, which he reached through the attic, Camden said.

When police arrived on the scene, the man allegedly placed a gun to his head, and authorities attempted to "talk him down," Camden said.

Camden said the man then indicated to a sergeant on the scene that he would shoot the sergeant if he didn't shoot the man first. The man then allegedly lowered his gun and began to point it at the sergeant, when another officer fired two shots and hit the man in the side.

He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with non-life threatening injuries, Camden said. As of Tuesday night, the man was released from the hospital for further "evaluation," police said.

No police officers or civilians were injured, Camden said.

The Independent Police Review Authority received notification of the shooting at 10:23 p.m., spokesman Larry Merritt said. The IPRA is investigating.
