CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A judge Wednesday handed out the maximum sentences to two gang members convicted of killing a Chicago police officer.

"It will never bring any closure, the loss will never be any less. But we're thankful that it's over," said Brenda Valadez.

Brenda, a sister of the late Chicago police officer "Alex" Valadez, was reacting to the sentencings of Kevin Walker and Christopher Harris.

Walker and Harris are two of the three men convicted of murdering the 27-year-old tactical officer five years ago. Valadez, an expectant father, was shot and killed in West Englewood after he and Officer Thomas Vargas responded to a report of shots fired in the neighborhood.

State's attorney Anita Alvazrez was lead prosecutor at the trial.

"I want to thank the Valadez family. I want to thank them for their patience and being here each and every day and supporting us," said Alvazrez.

According to prosecutors, Walker and Harris were part of a "kill team" which included Shawn Gaston, who has already received a 125 year sentence. The three gang members believed they were firing at rival gang members in retaliation for an earlier shooting. Valadez, dressed in civilian clothes but wearing his bullet proof vest, was shot in the head; the bullet staying in his brain.

Walker, the driver, had been on probation for armed robbery. He received 120 years from Judge Jorge Alonso. Harris, one of the two shooters, received 105 years.

"I think this sends a strong message to those people that want to take the law into their own hands that you can't just go out there and shoot. That there's no place for that in our society, there's no place for that in the city of Chicago," said Alvarez.

Harris declined when given the chance to speak in court. Walker, though, apologized to the Valadez family.

In 2010, the state's attorney's office drafted and helped pass the "Valadez Law," which mandates a prison sentence for unlawful possession of a firearm by a gang member.
