Thieves finding ways to pry open gas pumps

Thieves are coming up with new ways to break into gas station pumps.

At a gas station on Van Dyke Avenue near Eight Mile Road the owners have had to install metal cages to protect the pumps, and sometimes that doesn't even work.

The suspects are cracking open the pumps and busting a gear so that gas will continue to flow without showing on the meter. The cars then start lining up for fuel on the cheap.

"I witnessed one day at one of the gas stations. A guy comes in, he pays two dollars for gas inside. He comes in, he starts selling a fill-up for 10 dollars," says Sam Chahrour.

The suspects are strategically placing their vehicles so the surveillance cameras are basically useless, and so the employees inside can't see what's going on until thousands of dollars in gas is already gone.

Gas station owner Mike Rizka says around $12,000 worth of gas was stolen from his business' pumps from one Thursday night through a Sunday.

Many stations are now turning to businesses that specialize in making the pumps tamper resistance, or other gadgets that make siphoning the gas more difficult. For example, crews installed locks on the underground tanks at a gas station near Wyoming and Puritan streets, along with a system that measures exactly how much gas is flowing.

"I'm sure they will find a way to cheat the system again, but until then we have slowed them down," says Rizka.
