A high school track coach was arrested -- accused of having sex with a 17-year-old runner and it was the victim's friends who discovered the alleged relationship and told police.

The girl's friends say they noticed she was withdrawn and were concerned.  They said she had been spending a lot of time with her track coach.

On Saturday night, they say they found inappropriate messages between the two on her Facebook account and called police.

48-year-old Bo Reed was later arrested that day.  The Veritas Prep Academy track coach appeared in front of a judge Monday after being accused of having sex with a teen girl he coached.

"Alright sir, you're here because you were arrested on eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor," said the judge.

According to court paperwork, both the victim and Reed admitted to having sexual contact over the last two months.

Former teacher Ryanne Costello lives near the school.

"As a parent and teacher both, it's very scary.. unfathomable is a good word," she said.

The school says it does extensive background checks on employees.

Reed, whose web site shows he's also a private running coach in Flagstaff, told the judge he could not afford the $54,000 bond.

"I have to work up in Flag and I still need to help out the family," said Reed.

"In order to be released sir, you have to post bond," said the judge.

Reed remains in jail.

The school says he is suspended without pay and they're conducting their own review to assure no other inappropriate behavior occurred while Reed was coaching there.

Statement from Great Hearts Academies:

"On March 22nd, 2014, Veritas Preparatory Academy received information from the Phoenix Police Department that track and field coach, Mr. Bo Reed, was arrested for inappropriate relations with a student from our school. We have not been given full details of this ongoing police investigation, but we have been told there are no indications of force and no information that would lead police to believe any other students may be involved with Mr. Reed.

Mr. Reed has been suspended without pay from all duties.  During the investigation, we will continue to cooperate with law enforcement.  Veritas Prep, as part of its regular hiring practices, conducts extensive background checks on all our employees.  We have undertaken our own review to assure that no other inappropriate behavior occurred while Mr. Reed was coaching at our school.

The leadership of Veritas Preparatory Academy remains committed to ensuring the safest environment for its students."
