Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

They say that timing is everything in politics, so you gotta wonder how the timing of the court decision on gay marriage plays into the timing of Bill Schuette's decision to launch his re-election bid this week.

Suffice it to say he didn't plan it that way but for better or worse he is stuck with it.

This much is for sure.  If this story was not dominating the headlines, the Attorney General's announcement tour would have been a yawner for most reporters. Chances are most would have ignored it.

But now he gets lots of media attention. The bad news for him, nobody wants to talked about his candidacy but want to run him around the mulberry bush on gay marriage, which by the way if you have not heard, he Opposes with a capitol "O."

The fact that he is running was probably buried in most stories as reporters focused on the unfolding court battle over Mr. Schuette's efforts to undo what a federal judge did in Detroit last week opening the door for gay marriage if only for one day.

So how does his stance play out visa vie his bid to continue as the state's top law enforcement officer?

He'll never get the gay vote, obviously.  No shocker there.

He will get the Catholic bishops.  No shocker there, either.

But what about the majority of citizens who apparently have changed their minds from their vote in 2004 to ban gay marriage here.  If the polls are right, it is Mr. Schuette who is now out of step with a majority who believe, what the heck, let them get married.  But his supporters argue that is not the point; he has no choice but to do what he is doing although the LGBT community has asked him to stop.

It would be a stretch to conclude that this one issue will turn the A.G. election but if, per chance, it turns out to be a close contest, it's this kind of wedge issues that can make a difference. It is a question of which groups show up to vote: Conservative anti-gay marriage types or independents and others who disagree?

Mr. Schuette doesn't seem to care. As far as he's concerned, you're either with him or against him and let the chips fall where they may.
