GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The drivers involved in a two-car crash in Northwest Indiana are dead after one of the cars burst into flames Thursday morning, police said.

Rescue crews responding to the crash about 5 a.m. near the intersection of 5th Avenue and Calhoun Street found a driver trapped inside an SUV engulfed in flames and another rolled-over car that had "extensive damage," Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene about 6:10 a.m. by a Lake County Coroner's office representative, King said.

The coroner's office could not immediately be reached to confirm the deaths.

Police were still at the scene investigating at 7:15 a.m., King said.
