Tree Service Troubles

Posted: Updated:
JONESBORO, Ga. -

With the icy winter just behind us and the windy spring just ahead, a lot of folks think this time of year about those tall trees in the yard.  Here's a reminder from a viewer of what happens if you don't find a good tree service before you really need it.

"It's a total disaster," said Charles Hopkins looking out over his tree-strewn yard.

The Jonesboro resident was nervous about the tall pines in his back yard because this is a gathering spot for his kids and their friends - lots of them.

"They sit and they play. We give them Popsicles to keep all the kids in the neighborhood happy."

So, he decided to get rid of some trees. A friend recommended a tree service.

A recommendation made him comfortable. "That's what made me think he was going to do a real good job."

On January 23rd, Charles Hopkins signed a contract with Big T's Tree Service - a company with a B- score with the Better Business Bureau. Seemed safe.

He described what work he wanted to be done.

"I wanted them to do the front yard, all trees cut down, all debris hauled away, stumps grounded in the front yard."

And three more trees to cut down in the back yard.  He says Tim Adams showed up with a crew.

"I paid him $1,100 deposit. The whole job was supposed to be $1,600."

But a month later, Charles Hopkins filed a lawsuit in Clayton County against Tim Adams for an "unfinished job."   He's says he started the job then left him with trees felled in both front and back yards then walked away from the job.

"I've called. We've called from different numbers.  He'll pick up.  He'll tell us the same story," he said.

He says the tree man says, he's coming, but he says he never does.  Charles decided to make another call for help.  His friends and family did the job that he paid someone else to do. Even the children, Lorenzo and Destiny, decided to get to work. They want their yard back!

"That man thought my dad was one of those people he could run over. Oh, no. Not going to happen," said Lorenzo Barnes.

What did Tim Adams of Big T's Tree Service have to say for himself?  Well, the I-Team knocked at his door, but just like Charles Hopkins said, he's hard to find.

He wasn't home, but a neighbor came over. She said, hang on. Tim Adam's was on his way home. And, he was on the phone.

Here's the telephone conversation from my end, "And you're out of town and you'll be back next week? I don't think that's accurate. And, he hung up.

Charles says soon after this someone came to his house offering him $300 to call off the I-Team and to drop the complaint.  He said, no, he'd handle it in court.

Here's a tip:  Get numbers for a trusted electrician, a tree cutter, and a locksmith in your phone now, before you need it in an emergency situation.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
