ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A public recreation center in northwest suburban Elgin remains closed after an "extensive" leak of hydrochloric acid occurred in a tank inside the facility's pool filter room early Friday, the Courier-News is reporting.

No injuries were reported from the spill, which was mainly contained in the room, authorities said.

According to a release from the Elgin Fire Department, firefighters responded at 12:14 a.m. to the leak at The Centre, 100 Symphony Way.

Workers at the facility told firefighters that there had been a large leak from the hydrochloric acid tank in the pool filter room. The capacity of the tank was estimated to be 250 gallons, the release said.

Police and firefighters evacuated the building, with all workers accounted for, officials said.

Personnel from Elgin and South Elgin Fire Department hazardous materials teams donned protective suits entered the spill area. Firefighters "determined there was an extensive leak, but no source of the leak could be determined," the release said.

Personnel tested the liquid and confirmed that it was hydrochloric acid that had spilled. Authorities said the spill had been primarily contained within the room and no acid entered floor drains in the facility.

"There was very minimal acid that spilled outside the room, which is fitted with raised curbing, designed to contain spills such as this," the release said.

A hazardous materials remediation company was contacted to clean-up the spill and The Centre will remain closed until the it is cleaned up and the building is made safe to re-enter, according to the fire department.
