Robbers Steal Donated Playset From Forsyth Co. Church

Posted: Updated:

Father Barnabas of the Saints Raphael was shocked when he discovered that the Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox Church in Cumming had been robbed Sunday morning. The robbers had stolen a children's playset that had been donated to the church.

"We had a precious family that donated a new playset, swingset and play area for our children, we have a growing number of kids here at the parish and we wanted to do something nice for the kids to play on," says Barnabas

Barnabas says criminals recently stole a lawnmower and copper from one of their buildings, but to steal from children makes it that much worse.

"It's heart breaking but it's not just heartbreaking for us, our faith teaches us to reach out to people who are their own worst enemies. We feel bad for the people who feel the necessity to do something like this," says Barnabas.

Father Barnabas estimates the cost of the playset at more than a thousand dollars but he claims that the damage of not having a place for the children to play is even more devastating. Barnabas says he has strong words but no ill will to the people who stole from them.

"To the precious folks who felt they needed a playground more than the children of our parish, we pray for you, may god watch over you and protect you," says Barnabas.

Barnabas says the church will look into security cameras and fences to prevent thefts like this from happening again.

Fox 5 has learned that the church will receive a new donated playset from an anonymous donor. We are told that the new playset will be twice the size of the original set that was stolen

The church would like to thank everyone for their kind words and offers to help.
