It looks like its every man for himself, for Snyder, Shuette on gay marriage issue

Posted: Updated:
Lansing WJBK - It is curious at best.  Perplexing at worse. Why would the governor chose to ignore legal council from the very guy assigned to provide it and use his own legal-eagles instead?

On the gay marriage dispute, Gov. Rick Snyder tried to get his Attorney General Bill Schuette on the horn on how to handle this politically explosive hot potato, but when he didn’t get a call back, he never tried again.

"Did you talk to the attorney general?” reporters wanted to know after the governor declared some same sex marriages to be legal but void, for the moment, of any benefits.

The governor simply said “No” but did not rule out the possibility that somebody from Mr. Schuette’s shop conferred with somebody from the gov’s.

The point is the governor did not feel the need to talk with Mr. S otherwise he would have called until they connected.  Then again, the phone line runs in both directions but remained deader than a door nail.

Let’s just say this is a touchy issue with the gang in the Schuette shop regarding the working relationship between these two Republicans who have not always seen eye to eye.

Mr. Schuette’s office dashed off a quick news release, after the governor made his statement, noting the the two offices talk all the time.  It was a transparent and rather clumsy attempt to mask the obvious that on this one, the two did not have a chat.

Which brings us to the question why not?

Good question.

Thank you.

In this one you can only speculate and unless somebody says this is wrong, try it on for size.

The gay marriage issue is a political land-mine.  The governor has tried to navigate these waters and perhaps he is uncomfortable with the manner Mr. Schuette has done the same.  In other words, the governor does not want his attorney dictating how the governor handles this as they both run for re-election.

So when the governor says the marriages performed recently are legal; please note Mr. Schuette has not said the same thing.

Maybe its only a disagreement over the law, or maybe we’re seeing two guys trying to survive this issue with the electorate and not wanting the other to dictate how to do it?

It’s apparently every man for himself.
