DETROIT (WJBK) - Police are investigating the attack of a man who appeared to have stopped to help a young boy he had just accidentally hit with his car.

Police say at about 4:10 p.m. Wednesday an 11-year-old boy was walking along a sidewalk near Morang Drive and Balfour Road on Detroit's northeast side when he stepped off the curb into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was hit.

The driver of the vehicle stopped to check on the boy. As he was outside of his vehicle, police say approximately 10 - 12 men who witnessed the apparent accident came over and began attacking and beating the driver.

Both the boy and the driver were taken to the hospital.

The boy suffered a broken leg.

The driver, though, is in critical condition.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to speak up. You can call the Detroit Police Department at (313) 596-1616.
