Find Spring Allergy Relief

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Donna Richardson's 5 year old Brionna Miller has become kind of a pro at these allergy skin tests.Because for her, Spring is rough.

Richardson says her daughter is sensitive to, "A lot of things outside. Pollen, trees, grass."

Brionna's allergist, Dr. Lily Hwang with Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, is seeing a steady stream of misery these days. She's hearing, "Complaints of congestion, runny nose, stuffy nose, headaches, fatigue. Most people, actually, notice their symptoms even before the pollen counts go up."

If you suffer from Springtime allergies, Dr. Hwang says you need a plan. She says, "You have to first identify that allergen to be able to figure out what we're going to treat, or how we're going to treat it"

An allergy skin test can pin down what's bugging you.

Once you know, don't wait to take your medication. Hwang says, "Everyone waits until their eyes are red, or they've very congested, they feel miserable. And then they try to take medication. Most medicines do not work at that time, because by then your body has already released most of the chemicals that are activating you. And if you're using medicines that are supposed to prevent that, it doesn't happen."

Another - way to be ready? Pay attention to the pollen count. That way, Hwang says, "You can figure out, well if it's going to be high today, maybe I need to take more medicines."

On high pollen days, limit your time outside, and shower and wash your clothes when you come back in. Hwang says, "All you want to do is live the quality of life that you want. You want to get out there, do what you want to do. If you're out there running and you're having a miserable time, no one is going to enjoy that."

If your symptoms are mild, you may want to pick up a non-sedating antihistamine medication at the drugstore. If you need something more, talk to your doctor about seeing an allergist.

Remember, you want to get out ahead of your allergies, so use your medication every day, even if you wake up feeling fine.
