Pastor summoned to grand jury in Detroit council probe

DETROIT (AP) -- A lawyer says a prominent Detroit pastor has been called to a federal grand jury to talk about what he knows about efforts to influence the selection of Detroit City Council leaders.

Michael Cafferty tells The Detroit News that his client, the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, is not a target of any probe. He's been told to appear before a grand jury on April 24. Sheffield's daughter is a member of the council.

Federal authorities aren't commenting.

Cafferty says Sheffield had heard rumors of illegal activities and warned Mary Sheffield to report anything suspicious. She tells The News she wasn't offered anything.

Brenda Jones was made council president in a 5-4 vote in January. She says she doesn't know anything about an investigation. She says, "I don't do rumors.
