Glass Slipper Project gives prom dresses to students in need

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Nearly 700 girls will be lining up to pick out a prom dress for their big day. The Glass Slipper Project helps girls go to prom by giving away dresses to those that cannot afford one.

Zengler Cleaners in Northbrook cleaned and tailored the dresses, and took them to shopping boutiques in Chicago Saturday morning so that each student in need could find the perfect dress.

"I woke up at two thirty in the morning, to get here at four thirty in the morning" Vanessa Moedano told FOX 32 News.

The Little Village Infinity High School senior arrived at Price Elementary School awfully early Saturday morning, hoping to find a dress for her senior prom. Some students had been in line since midnight, to get first dibs on one of the slightly used, donated dresses.

"I was going through so many dresses, and I was saying no, no, no," Moedano said. "Then I found the perfect one that was just as glamorous as I wanted it to be."

In addition to gowns, there were accessories like shoes and handbags to choose from, donated mostly by students who had used them for proms in earlier years. The giveaway is co-sponsored by a textile recycling company, USAgain.

"We're giving away thousands of prom dresses, more than two thousand prom dresses, to area high school girls," USAgain's Lissa Christman told FOX 32. "All they need to do is come here, show a high school ID from Chicago Public Schools, and they get a free prom dress."

Tania Mosley has volunteered at the Glass Slipper Project for the last five years. This year she volunteered as a personal shopper to help the excited young girls find the right dress. About 500 volunteers will be on stand-by as personal shoppers.

"The experience is uplifting, because you see these young ladies, who wouldn't normally have an opportunity to get these beautiful dresses, or this makeup, or the shoes, to go to prom," Mosley said. "It is one of the most inspirational things you can do."

The Glass Slipper Project will give away dresses on April 12 and April 26.
