CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A teenage boy was shot to death Saturday night in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side.

A growing memorial marks the spot where Simeon Career Academy sophomore and football player 16-year-old Michael Eugene Flournoy III was fatally shot.

Flournoy's mother's sobs and heartbreak touched the crowd filled with family, friends and complete strangers.

"Whoever stole my grandson's life please give yourself up. Please help us, no matter what, he's gone," said Samuel Woods, Flournoy's grandfather.

Chicago police are still piecing together what happened, but the deadly attack was apparently the aftermath of a verbal altercation between Flournoy and a group of suspects who approached him.

Fighting through tears, Flournoy's grandfather described a young man with a bright future abruptly cut short.

"A boy with so many dreams, a child loved by so many people, a good kid. He didn't do drugs and he didn't gang bang. He was loved," said Woods.

On the heels of Flournoy's death, an anti-violence summit focused on solutions took place at Reformation Lutheran Church near Palmer Park.

"In 30 days we will be working in conjunctions with persons in diverse persons from across different stratus to deal with the toxicity of violence in the city of Chicago," said Pastor Anthony Williams, Director of Freedom Social Justice Ministries.

Flournoy was one of nearly two dozen shot since Friday night.

His classmates took to Twitter to offer their condolences while his family made a plea to the public to turn the killer in.

"He was my friend, he was a part of me and now he's gone. Somebody help us, hold us, help us, we are so hurt. We are so hurt," said Woods.

Police discovered Flournoy with a gunshot wound to the head at 7:53 p.m. in the 1000 block of East 93rd Street. He was dead at the scene.
