Mother to be sentenced in daughter's slaying

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -- A mother faces sentencing in the stabbing death of her 8-year-old daughter in their Detroit home.

Semeria Greene is scheduled to return Monday morning to Wayne County Circuit Court.

She pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and will serve at least 23 years in prison before she's considered for parole. The maximum term would be 50 years.

Greene's plea came before the case went to trial.

The Department of Human Services tried to remove Tameria Greene and her siblings from their home in 2012. But court Referee Richard Smart declined, suggesting instead that their mother should move out or place the children elsewhere.

The state didn't appeal. Tameria was killed in late December 2012.

Psychiatric evaluations of Semeria Greene extended the criminal case.
