DETROIT — A mass tree-planting effort is planned for May as part of a large-scale project by a company that wants to put vacant Detroit land to agricultural use.

Columnist Laura Berman of The Detroit News reports a May 17 event is planned by John Hantz where volunteers will help plant 15,000 young maple and oak trees on 50 acres of land where crews have been clearing blighted properties for the project.

For the planting day, crews expect to have 15,000 pre-drilled holes ready.

Last year, Detroit's state-appointed emergency manger approved a purchase agreement for 140 acres of land on the city's east side as part of the Hantz Woodlands tree-growing project. The work is part of broader efforts to fight blight in Detroit and use vacant land.
