Chicago program offers young people work, learning

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the city's young people will have 10,000 additional academic and job-training opportunities this year as part of the "Summer of Earning and Learning."

The idea of the program is to keep residents aged 4 to 24 active during the summer months.

Emanuel says there will be 215,000 opportunities this summer. They include activities at parks, libraries, schools, museums, college and universities, and jobs through city and county departments and sister agencies.

A program Emanuel launched last year, "Chicago Summer of Learning," will support science, technology, engineering, art and math learning for students. "One Summer Chicago" will add 2,000 job opportunities.

The Summer of Earning and Learning challenges young people to earn digital badges to mark their successes.
