CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's almost prom season, and before the tux and the gown, juniors and seniors have to find the right date.

Because of social media, students have to get creative with not "who" they ask to the prom, but "how."

"This is for you Tina," said a teen in a YouTube prom proposal

They're called ‘promposals.' They're all over the Internet and quickly becoming the best way ever to ask a girl or guy to the high school prom in a very public way.

"They're really big, public, and you want to make everyone see them… you gotta do something unique which gets really difficult because over the years, everything's been done," said high school junior Jack Thompson.

Some are as short as a commercial. Others, though, are more like a mini documentary.

You want to be able to post and share that creative side on Vine, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Some videos receive up to a million views.

"Every year it's just super exciting when the first promposal happens, and it's just really sweet to see couples…you know the whole school gathers around them," said high school senior Mariah Mata.

"It wouldn't be my style of choice per se' but I mean if she likes it and he likes it --- then go for it you know," said junior Jack Brosnam.

Gregory Green is a senior at Walter Payton High School on Chicago's north side. He said he's seen the ‘promposal' video, but adds what we don't see at home are the pre-prom pops.

"I was really nervous and I didn't want to get rejected in front of everyone, so you know you gotta ask ahead of time," green said.

Green is keeping his ‘promposal' ideas a secret.
