Division Street bridge detours start Friday morning

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Trucks and buses will be detoured around the Division Street bridge beginning Friday morning in preparation for the structure's planned demolition and replacement this summer.

The detours, which will apply to vehicles weighing more than five tons, are meant to prevent further deterioration to the bridge before it is replaced, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Starting Friday morning, trucks will be detoured south around the bridge to Chicago Avenue via Ashland Avenue and Halsted Street, CDOT said. Eastbound trucks exiting the Kennedy Expressway can use an alternate route via North Branch Street to Halsted.

The CTA's #70 Division and #132 Goose Island bus routes will detour around the bridge via Halsted, North Branch and Cherry Street, CDOT said.

Lighter vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians will still be allowed to use the bridge until demolition begins in June, CDOT said.
