Spring finally here, for a while, as temps hit 70 degrees in Chicago

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

After a record-breaking, seemingly never-ending winter, spring has finally sprung in the Chicago area, at least for a few days.

For the first time since Oct. 12, 2013, temperatures at both O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport peaked at 70 degrees Friday afternoon, according to Casey Sullivan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Saturday's temperatures will be similar, with highs in the Chicago area expected to reach the mid-70s, Sullivan said.

Then comes Sunday, which he called a "day of change."

Highs on Sunday are not forecast to surpass the mid-60s, and the falling temperatures will bring a storm system that could bring up to 2 inches of rain before the Monday morning commute, Sullivan said.

The heaviest rain will likely fall across northwest Illinois, he said. Rockford is forecasted to get up to 3 inches of rain.

"Sunday—especially Sunday night—is not going to be as nice as today and tomorrow," Sullivan said. "But the storm will end Monday morning."

Highs on Monday and Tuesday will only reach the low 40s, with lows in the upper 20s, which won't feel much like spring.
