New speed cameras to start issuing tickets Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

New speed cameras will begin issuing tickets in "Children Safety Zones" near two Northwest and Lower West side elementary schools next week.

Automated Speed Enforcement cameras near Pickard Elementary School, at 2301 W. 21st Pl., and Jonathan Burr Elementary School, at 1621 W. Wabansia Ave, have completed a "warning phase" and will begin issuing tickets Wednesday, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

On Monday, new cameras will begin issuing warnings for a 30-day period in the following locations:

- Near Columbus Park, at 506 S. Central Ave. and 515 S. Central Ave.

- Near Odgen Plaza Park, at 319 E. Illinois St.

The Children's Safety Zones are designated within 1/8th of a mile from Chicago parks or schools, the statement said.

The city will begin by issuing tickets for speeders going 10 or more m.p.h. over the posted speed limit, and the threshold will gradually be lowered. Vehicles traveling six to 10 m.p.h. over the posted limit in a Safety Zone will be fined $35, and vehicles more than 11 m.p.h. over the limit will be fined $100.

Enforcement hours occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in safety zones near schools on school days. From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., drivers should maintain 20 m.p.h. when children are present and the posted limit when children are not present. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., drivers should maintain the posted speed limit.

Near parks, enforcement hours occur during the hours those parks are open, typically from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days-a-week.
