1,500 illegal guns seized in first 15 weeks of year

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Police have seized more than 1,500 illegal guns since the start of 2014, the department announced Monday.

The announcement came after a bloody weekend in the city that saw four people killed and at least 33 others wounded in shootings, which police say underscores "the need for stronger, more reasonable gun laws," according to a Chicago Police statement.

"Even with the best policing and strongest prevention efforts in the world, without better state and federal laws, illegal guns will remain a serious public safety challenge," police Supt. Garry McCarthy said in the statement.

Chicago Police recover more illegal firearms than any other city in the nation, according to the department.

McCarthy mentioned three incidents last week in which police recovered illegal weapons while conducting routine traffic stops and field interviews.

Police said earlier this month that overall crime is down about 25 percent compared to this time last year, with Chicago's lowest first-quarter murder total in 56 years.

"While Chicago continues to see a reduction in crime and violence, there's obviously much more work to be done and we continue to be challenged by lax state and federal gun laws," McCarthy said.
