Fox 29 Gets Results For Residents Fed Up With Illegal Dumping

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Residents along the 8400 block of Crane Street have been putting up with "short-dumpers" in their neighborhood for years.

So Fox 29 went to work to try to get a solution for the frustrated residents. Bruce Gordon reports on the progress made since we last visited Crane Street.

The short-term answer is to get the mounds of illegally dumped trash cleaned up, but the long-term answer is to stop it from happening again, which means fining and cracking down on those responsible for the dumping.

Well, we made some progress on both fronts. Just two days after our initial report, city cleanup crews were out on Crane Street at Fox 29's request, using heavy equipment to haul away the latest illegal dumped material.

Neighborhood activists who've been fighting this battle for years were thrilled at the quick results.

"I would really like to thank you, Bruce Gordon, for going out there and actually getting the job done. You were able to cut to the chase with a lot of things, which we've been trying to do, and you have gotten this problem cleared up very quickly, anyway," Leonard Stewart said.

However, before the clean-up began, we took a closer look at the most recent mess.

It included a postal uniform with the name "Mark," and a photo album with pictures of a family pet that showed a last name.

That full name led us to this home on Hutchinson Terrace in Holmes, Delaware County.

Turns out mark had died in January, and his sister had contracted with a local company to clean out the place so she could sell it.

"I was horrified, first of all, because they were my brother's personal belongings and the contents of his house," Mark's sister said.

When asked if she was aware that the residents of Crane Street were getting fed up with the illegal dumping.

She said, "Well, of course, as anybody would be if it was their neighborhood. Nobody has the right to illegally dump any trash there. So I was upset for the people that live there, but also upset that those were my brother's belongings that were thrown in a random lot somewhere."

Fox 29 has learned that more than one company was involved in cleaning out that home on Hutchinson Terrace. We're still working to figure out which company was responsible for the illegal dumping.
