West Goshen Township Proposed Natural Gas Pumping Station Controversy

Posted: Updated:
WEST GOSHEN, Pa. -

We don't want it! That's the message some residents are sending about a proposed natural gas pumping station in Chester County.

In the quiet rolling suburbs of West Goshen Township, a controversy is blooming.

"I am at ground zero here, and I'm afraid, frankly," said West Goshen Township resident, Tony Natale.

Natale isn't afraid to tell you that he's mad.

"This is right next to kids, right next to families, right next to our homes. Why can't they go a mile down the road?" Natale said.

Natale is talking about a proposed natural gas pumping station Sunoco Logistics wants to build on its current property near Route 202 and Boot Road, which is just feet away from his backyard.

"Even if you take away the sound problems, and you take away how ugly it's going to look. You are still breathing in everything that's being pumped out of the pumping station while we eat our dinner sitting on the porch," Natale said.

The project would deliver liquid natural gas from Western Pennsylvania to Marcus Hook using existing pipelines. The new 4-acre station would include a pump enclosure, valves, and a 34-foot vapor combusting tower. Neighbors worry about noise, safety and health concerns.

"Absolutely angry," said West Goshen Township resident, Lvo Lekich.

Ivo Lekich moved here in the 70's when this was all cornfields.

"We have our kids here. We have senior citizen's here. Some people that have been here that have respiratory issues. It's undoubtedly going to affect the quality of life here," Lekich said.

"They want to put it right across the street from hard working Americans. I can't stand it and I can't stand for it," Natale said.

The company released the following statement:

Sunoco Logistics' Mariner East pipeline is an important energy project to ship natural energy resources from the Marcellus Shale area of Western Pennsylvania east to the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex on the Delaware River, for both domestic and international markets. The approximately 300-mile project will use mostly existing pipeline that had been used to carry petroleum products through many communities, including West Goshen Township. Sunoco Logistics' first priority is safety; we took the pipeline out of service last year to perform testing and upgrades to the pipe, going above and beyond regulatory requirements to ensure safe transport on our line. Our pumping stations and valve sites each increase the safety of the pipeline, adding additional layers of monitoring and control. We look forward to meeting with residents next week to discuss our commitment to safety and to address their questions and concerns.
