Christians around world mark Good Friday

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - From the Holy Land to the streets of New York City, Christians have commemorated the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Good Friday prayers and processions.

Thousands of Christian pilgrims filled the cobblestone alleyways of the Old City along the Via Dolorosa, Latin for the "Way of Suffering."

They carried wooden crosses and followed the 14 stations ending at the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Tradition says the church was built on the site where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.

In NYC, Timothy Cardinal Dolan and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio lead followers across the Brooklyn Bridge. As they walked, participants in the 19th annual procession heard Gospel readings, choral music and scripture readings.

According to the Gospels, Jesus ate his last supper -- a Passover meal -- hours before he was betrayed. Christians believe Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and resurrected on Easter Sunday.
