Easter Sunday benefit for Steve Utash and crime victims

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -  Five suspects including three teenagers are due in court Monday for preliminary exams in the brutal beating of Steve Utash. Since his near death beating by a mob, family, friends and total strangers have rallied around Utash. The latest show of support was on Easter Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church in Detroit.

The son of Steve Utash, 54, stood beside three other families who've endured tragedies themselves. The fundraiser included prayers and songs for victims of violence. Utash remains in the hospital after being brutally beaten earlier this month. He's now awake from his coma but he still has a long recovery ahead. Utash's family joined the loved ones of Eric Miles, 38, who was killed outside a Detroit gas station. The family of Renisha McBride, 19, was also there. She was shot to death in November. The family of Darryl Smith, 19, who was caught in gang gunfire was also there. The teen died just last week.

The four families leaned on each other saying this day was not about race or age - but, about ending violence that has already taken such a toll.
