Man Turns In $1,000 Found In Walmart Parking Lot

Posted: Updated:

A Virginia man's good deed is earning him some admiration.

He found $1,000 in a store parking lot, and instead of keeping it he turned it in.

23-year-old Jacob Kroko found the cash in an envelope in a Walmart parking lot.

Kroko said he decided to do the right thing, and turn the cash over to the police.

It's a decision that even had cops surprised.

“They were shocked that I walked in. They were like do you have money, and I said yeah a hundred dollars bills. And they were like okay," Kroko said.

Others admit that they would have kept the cash.

“Take it and spend it," one person said when asked what they would’ve done if they found an envelope full of cash.

Kroko said he can relate to the person that lost the money.

“There is always the thought, always the thought of, ‘I could leave right now and I’m a thousand dollars richer," Kroko said. “But the second thought is, ‘What if I lost that money?’”

Defense Department Police Officer Jason Carey explained that people usually turn in money because they think someone sees them pickup the cash.

“It’s kind of psychological. Most people will turn it in because they think they are being watched,” Officer Carey said.

Shoppers say it’s wonderful to hear that there are Good Samaritans out there.

"It’s great to hear there are people like that out there," one shopper said.

While another agreed, but said she would’ve kept the cash and spent it.

"That’s wonderful that he would do that, but I’m just saying I would keep the money and spend it hahaha.”

The Fredericksburg police commended Kroko's good deed on their police blog.

Cops were able to return the cash to its owner.
