Gwinnett Co. upgrades "Smart Commute" system

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

Commuters in Gwinnett County have an extra tool when it comes to battling traffic each day. In March, the county Department of Transportation launched new upgrades to their "Smart Commute" system.

It was a program kick started by the Olympics in 1996, now Gwinnett County's "Smart Commute" system spans 186 miles, and includes 188 cameras along 17 major routes through the county. It's all meant to save you headaches on the highway.

Gwinnett County remains one of the fastest growing counties in Georgia, meaning, traffic is always a problem.

"When kids are going to school and when people are coming home around 4 or 5 these streets are really congested," explains Gwinnett County driver Raymond Gomez.

"With a population of around 800,000 people we have to do what we can to keep people moving," adds Tom Sever Gwinnett County DOT Section Chief with Traffic Signal and ITS.

And from the Traffic Control Center in Lawrenceville, the county's Department of Transportation is working to save you time and money on the road with their "Smart Commute" website. It's another traffic fighting tool, just a few clicks away.

"It's been very helpful. There have been many opportunities to improve delays for people to reduce congestion due to accidents or construction, and we feel like we've added a value to the citizens," adds Sever.

They've added a total of 188 cameras at busy intersections all around the county, giving you a bird's eye view of your specific ride, before you head for the interstate.

"I would definitely go to it and check it out before I get on the road. It may be a major accident or it may be a delay," says Nakeidra Floyd, another Gwinnett County driver who wasn't aware she had access to the cameras.

"I wouldn't mind checking the cameras to see where it's congested or what alternate routes I can take," adds Gomez. "I think it's going to be a great help."

With more than 30 other cameras in the works, the county hopes it's a resource you can rely on.

"We feel proud of it, we've put a lot of effort into it and we try very hard to provide that value to the citizens. We hope that they take advantage of it and find it to be a valuable tool on their commutes," Sever says.

On top of the "Smart Commute" website, live video feeds can also be pulled up on TV-Gwinnett during the week during the morning and evening rush hour.

I think this is what many of us assume about outlet mall shopping -- we get rock bottom prices on everything from clothes to housewares on brand names that are either leftovers from last year or this year's overstock. Well, it's not quite like that.
