Quiet start to the tornado season

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The 2014 tornado season is off to an extremely slow start. The main reason is that the winter season across the lower 48 was not only a cold and snowy one, but carried over into March and early April.

Through April 20th, there have been only 109 tornadoes reported around the country compared to the 9 year average of 413. This is the slowest start of our tornado season since 2010 when only 97 tornadoes were reported through the 3rd week of April.

Here in Illinois, 18 tornadoes have been reported since January 1st with the majority of those down state.

Things look to heat up this weekend across the southern plains as warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico surges north combined with a powerful jet stream coming across the Rockies.
