A hot air balloon makes an unexpected landing on a bridge in Rancho Bernardo, California.

The balloon, which is owned by Skysurfer Balloon Company, had eight people on board plus the pilot. Because of wind gusts, it missed its intended target and continued to travel east. It came down next to stores.

Shoppers even helped out by grabbing the ropes directing the balloon away from a street lamp.

The pilot, Phil Brandt, unsuccessfully tried to get the balloon back up so he could land somewhere else, but he was unsuccessful.

San Diego firefighters helped move the hot air balloon's basket from the bridge. Officials say it was lucky the balloon missed the nearby freeway.

"The winds were too far left of the area we normally target. I was a little bit too far left suitable open fields that we are safe, and this area was clear of obstacles and cars and I did the landing," said Brandt.

The group had been in the air celebrating a birthday. No one was injured.
