West Chester University Students On Alert After Rash Of Violent Crime

Posted: Updated:
WEST CHESTER, Pa. -

"A lot people have been going out buying pepper spray just in case something were to happen. It's scary," said Rebecca Chlebnikow, a student at West Chester University.

She's one of many students walking on and off campus Friday night more alert.

"The Public Safety for the night in my dorm came up to a bunch of girls standing at the front desk, and she offered escort service to them if they were to need it tonight while they're out, " said Ian Mix.

Ian, his friends Amber and Michaela like almost everyone here are aware of the recent violence on campus.

"I think it's maybe just a little concerning because we've heard so much of it lately," said Michaela Zimmerman.

Since March 30 there have been three sex assaults and an attempted carjacking.

University Police also say there was an indecent assault Wednesday in the library where a man in his 50s to 60s touched a female student inappropriately. They arrested the suspect.

And Friday around 12:30 a.m. a student says a man approached her pretending to be drunk and touched her on the butt before running off.

"I'm not sure if it's necessarily crime on the rise or it's happening more. I think that people are just feeling a lot more comfortable in reporting it," said Amber Wolnomiajski.

Still, there is a fear across campus.

"Our parents are also very concerned they've been texting calling us constantly asking are we staying safe, staying in groups," said one student.

Others say University Police are stepping up their presence.

"Normally, being a female, you just kind of look around. Now, you're constantly looking over your shoulder and things like that, but you see more security now. So, you think like now they're doing something about it," said Charlene Wallace.

University officials posted a memo on their website Friday stating they have increased bike patrols and officers on and around campus.
