Woman shoots, injures suspected home intruder

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A homeowner on Detroit's west side shot a suspected home intruder who, according to the family, ignored her warning signs.

For several excruciating minutes, a 50-year-old woman was on the phone with 911 watching a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt slowly work to force her window open.

"There was long nail in there she put in there. She says she sat there for awhile and he had about a good 30 minutes trying to pry that window open while she was on the phone with 911," says Chevonne McGee, the homeowner's daughter.

The woman was home with her 25-year-old son. She told the intruder to back off and warned him that she had a gun and the police were on the way, but he apparently didn't listen.

"She stated to [the 911 dispatcher], 'He's coming into my home. I really do not want to shoot him. He's coming in; I can see him in my house.' The dispatcher stated to her, 'You have the right to protect yourself,'" says McGee.

Then the man's arm came through the window.

"He knocked the figurines off the top of the television, and that's when she fired at him. ... Once she fired, he came around this way and they caught him in this yard right here. And they also got the young lady in the truck," says McGee.

The 25-year-old suspect had been shot in the shoulder. He was taken into custody. His suspected getaway driver is a 16-year-old girl.

FOX 2 has learned the woman has been a licensed gun owner for two years but she never fired a shot until now. The homeowner has lived in the same west side house for 24 years, but FOX 2's Maurielle Lue reports she's ready to move.
