Gun owners rally at state capitol for freedom to carry weapons

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - Several hundred gun owners, with weapons on full display, rallied on the capitol lawn Tuesday during Open Carry Day.

Meanwhile, inside the capitol, school kids were on tour. In fact, six school groups that were scheduled to be here canceled the visit because guns would be in view.

Gun opponents argue whenever guns are around safety is at risk. Yet demonstrators want gun owners to carry weapons everywhere, including in so-called gun free zones such as sports arenas, schools, and churches.

Legislation to allow guns everywhere was in the works but was placed on hold after a school shooting last year.
