SAGINAW, Mich. (WJBK) - Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been banned for life by the NBA in response to racist comments the league says he made in a recorded conversation.

Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday a league investigation found that the league's longest-tenured owner was in fact the person on the audiotapes that were released over the weekend.

Michigan native Earvin "Magic" Johnson was targeted during the recorded rant. He was back in the state Tuesday night in Saginaw raising money for a scholarship foundation, where he spoke with FOX 2's Taryn Asher about the NBA's decision.

"It's great. It's a great day. It's a great day for the United States; it's a great day for the NBA; it was a great day for all people for all races, but especially African Americans, Latinos who he was speaking out a against," Johnson said. "I'm just happy that commissioner Adam Silver came down hard and showed that we can't let people get away with this, even if you're [an] owner."

Johnson now says he wants the sport to return to normal, and for the boycotts and protests to end. The former NBA player wants the fans to return to the stands, and for the Clippers to move forward.

"Hopefully that God will bless him, too, Donald Sterling," he added.

Some national media outlets have reported Magic Johnson is interested in buying the Los Angeles Clippers, calling it the best way to bail out the NBA's worst crisis of credibility.

"No, there haven't been [any] talks of that. People just link me to the team. I've been linked all to this situation. But, we hope the Clippers get a great owner, whoever that's going to be," Johnson tells Asher.

Sterling was also fined $2.5 million, which will be donated to organizations dedicated to anti-discrimination and tolerance efforts.
