Police: Home invasion suspect steals squad car, crashes

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Police say a home invasion suspect in Ypsilanti Township escaped from the back seat of a squad car to the front seat -- and took off.

James Roberson tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson he awoke to someone pounding and yelling at his front door to open up Tuesday morning. He did not know the man, so he told him to go away. The man then broke the glass at the front door.

Police were called and arrived quickly to the scene, and the suspect took off in his vehicle. Police followed him and made a traffic stop around East Michigan Avenue and Ecorse Road. Unsure of the man's involvement in the alleged attempted home invasion, police placed him uncuffed in the backseat of the squad car.

Then, the suspect broke through the partition and got behind the wheel and took off in the cruiser.

He drove until he crashed into a utility pole in a neighborhood near Glenwood and Hawthorne avenues, about a half mile away according to Google Maps. The suspect then took off running.

Police found the man and arrested him.

A crew was in the neighborhood fixing the utility pole.
