Alpharetta teen fulfills dream of playing with golf superstar

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
An Alpharetta teen golfer lived out her dream by playing with professional golfer Rory McIlroy.

Alejandra Ayala, 14,  never dreamed she would be playing with a 2-time major winner, but her dream became a reality Wednesday afternoon. According to a Wells Fargo press release the Webb Bridge Middle school student played with international golfer Rory McIlroy in the pro-am tournament of the 2014 Wells Fargo Championship.

My highlight of the day was playing with Rory and when I hit a good drive he said, ‘great strike’ or ‘nice shot,’” said Ayala. “He was really honest with all the tips that he gave me and even his putting coach (Dave Stockton) helped me out. He said, ‘You shouldn't pound it but stroke a putt soft like a paint brush.’”

According to information provided by Wells Fargo, Ayala received the opportunity after winning the national grand prize of First Tee and Well Fargo’s Succeeding Together contest. Ayala submitted a video essay focusing on the importance of having a mentor in the lives of American youth.

Ayala and her father received a four-day trip to Charlotte, North Carolina to play in the pro-am tournament. Ayala got to choose her playing partner and she said her first choice was McIlroy.

McIlroy said that he enjoyed his time playing with Ayala.

“She was nervous the first couple of holes, and once she relaxed she started hitting the ball really well.  She wanted to learn a lot; she asked me a lot of questions, and it was really nice to play with her,” said McIlroy.  “She had an eagle putt on 7.  She didn't quite make it but she had two great shots onto the green there, (and) hits it long for a 14-year-old.”

For Ayala golf is something that can be shared with her family. Ayala’s father said he originally introduced her to the sport because he wanted to use the it as a bonding experience for his family. Ayala’s father said that he had no idea she would be such a rising star.
