MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) - A $500,000 campaign is underway to restore a fort on Mackinac Island in time to mark its bicentennial next year.

Fort Holmes was built during the War of 1812. But the small, wood and earthen garrison has fallen into disrepair.

The nonprofit Mackinac Associates is turning to the public to raise the final $20,000 needed to complete the project.

All that's left of Fort Holmes is a timber gateway.

Its blockhouse and the logs used to form the fort's walls are gone.

Grass has overgrown the earthworks. The fort sits about a mile north of its well-known companion, Fort Mackinac.
