Art program therapeutic for stroke patients

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Creating art can be therapeutic. In this Healthworks report, FOX 2's Deena Centofanti introduces a program that helps heal hearts in many ways.

Art for Heart is a colorful partnership between the American Heart Association and Advantage Management Group The Manors. The program aims to help stroke patients feel the benefit of art therapy.

When  painting, not only are you using muscles and fine motor skills, but you're also using a part of your brain that's in charge of expression.

"Depending on what side of the body the stroke occurred, some people have something called expressive aphasia, where they can't speak out the words they want to speak. So, although their mind is in tact, when it comes out of their mouth, because of the stroke, things don't come out properly. So this is just a great way for them to be able to use this type of expression," says Kelsey Hastings, R.N.

Artwork will be displayed for a donation at the Metro Detroit Heart Walk happening Saturday at Ford Field. The donations will benefit the American Heart Association.
